anyone else feel like they're making the same supplemental essay mistakes?

I was deep in the supplemental essay grind when I started to notice a pattern in my drafts. I kept falling into the same traps - vague answers, trying to sound 'perfect,' and not actually reflecting my true self. It felt like a chore and honestly, it was stressing me out!

One of my biggest mistakes was writing what I thought the admissions committee wanted to hear. I poured my heart into a paragraph about my love for community service, even though I had only volunteered a couple of times. When I re-read it, I realized it sounded completely disingenuous. I wasn’t being honest, and that showed.

Then, I decided to flip the script. I started to focus on genuine experiences, even the messy ones. For instance, I wrote about my failed attempt to organize a school event, which taught me the importance of teamwork and communication. That felt much more real – and it made for a much better essay!

Another major thing I learned is that less is more. I tried to cram in all my achievements, thinking it would impress the reviewers. But it ended up just making everything feel cluttered and forced. I chose two or three experiences that really defined me and built my essays around them. This helped keep my writing focused and impactful.

Anyway, if you’re feeling the pressure of the supplemental essays (which I totally get), just remember: be real, be concise, and let your personality shine through. You've got this!
