Last year I fully thought “ask early” meant like 2 weeks before the deadline. It did not. If you’re wondering when to ask for recommendation letter, what worked way better for me the next time was asking 4-6 weeks ahead, and even earlier if it was a teacher during exam season.
I asked one teacher late and she still submitted, but I could tell it was rushed and I felt awful following up. The next cycle, I asked earlier, sent my resume, a short brag sheet, and the exact deadline in one message. Huge difference.
My rule now:
- 4-6 weeks before = ideal
- 8+ weeks before = even better for big scholarships/college apps
- Less than 2 weeks = only if you genuinely have no other option
Also, ask in person if you can. I got a much warmer yes that way.
