Common App mistakes I made and how you can avoid them

So, I was knee-deep in filling out my Common App, and I thought I had everything down to a science. But right before submitting, I had a mini panic. I realized I had made some mistakes that could've totally cost me! Here’s what I learned from my own mishaps.

First off, don’t underestimate the importance of the activities section. I cut down my descriptions so much that some ended up sounding like gibberish! I mean, who wants to read about 'volunteering at a shelter' when it sounds more like 'shelter volunteer random words'? To avoid this, read each description out loud after you edit. It makes spotting weird phrases way easier.

Another biggie was missing deadlines. I tried to keep a spreadsheet to track everything, but I ended up forgetting to update it. Lesson learned: set multiple reminders on your phone. Seriously, they saved me!

Lastly, make sure every part of your application tells a consistent story. I had a friend read through my essays, and she pointed out that my personal statement didn’t align with my activities. What a wake-up call! It all needs to gel together.

In short, double-check everything, work on that storytelling, and don’t freak out—there's still time to fix things before the deadline hits.
