If you're like me and have been staring at a blank screen for what feels like an eternity, you're not alone. I totally get the pressure. But one thing that made starting my Common App essay way easier for me was changing how I approached it.
Instead of trying to come up with some super poetic line or a catchy hook, I just started writing the straightforward version of my story. I focused on what I wanted to convey without worrying about how it sounded. Picture explaining my experience to a friend over coffee.
Once I got my thoughts down, I went back through and found the most engaging part of my story. That became my new opening. This way, I felt genuine, and it didn’t put too much pressure on myself to create the perfect start right away.
So, if you’re stuck, just write your essay like you’re chatting with someone. Later, you can spice it up!
