Last fall I was doom-scrolling tuition pages at like 1 a.m., convinced studying here was impossible. What actually helped was focusing specifically on merit scholarships for international students USA schools already offer, instead of only hunting external awards.
I made a spreadsheet with 4 columns: total cost, automatic merit, separate scholarship application, and whether internationals were eligible. That saved me so much time. A few schools had decent awards, but the sneaky part was that some required applying by the earliest deadline or submitting an extra essay.
What worked for me:
- checking each college’s international admissions page, not just the scholarship page
- emailing admissions to ask if merit aid was need-aware for internationals
- prioritizing schools where merit was renewable all 4 years
I still didn’t find many full rides, but I found enough realistic options to build a list. If anyone wants, I can share the spreadsheet categories I used.
