How to ask professor for recommendation letter was honestly way more awkward in my head than it needed to be, so here’s the simple thing that made it easier for me: make the ask specific and easy to answer.
What worked best was emailing with 4 quick parts:
- who I was and what class/research I knew them from
- what I’m applying to and why
- the exact deadline
- 2-3 things they could mention about me
I also attached my resume, transcript if relevant, and a short “brag sheet” so they didn’t have to dig around for details.
The biggest tip: don’t just ask for a letter. Ask if they feel they can write you a strong recommendation. That wording saved me because one professor politely said he didn’t know me well enough, which was way better than getting a generic letter.
I’d keep the email pretty short, like:
Hi Professor, I’m applying to ___ and was wondering if you’d feel comfortable writing a strong recommendation letter for me. I really enjoyed your ___ class, and I think you could speak to my ___ and ___. The deadline is ___. I attached my resume and a short summary in case that helps.
Also: ask earlier than you think. A month is good. More is better.
And after they agree, send a thank-you plus one follow-up reminder a week before the deadline. Not five reminders. Just one normal person reminder.
