How to improve GRE quant score when I mostly know the math, but timing keeps destroying my section?
I’m studying for the GRE right now and this is easily my biggest problem. On untimed practice, I can usually get to the right answer, but once I’m under the clock I either overthink, do too much algebra, or get stuck on one question and then rush the last 5-6. So if anyone has actually figured out how to improve GRE quant score in a realistic way, I’d really love advice.
For context, my weak spots seem to be:
- word problems that look simple but have traps
- probability/combinatorics
- choosing the fastest approach instead of the “school math” approach
- knowing when to skip and come back
I’ve been doing practice sets, but I’m not sure if I’m practicing the right way. Did your score improve more from drilling specific topics, doing full timed sections, keeping an error log, or memorizing certain patterns?
Also, if you raised your GRE quant score, what changed first?
- Did you start finishing sections on time?
- Did you get better at recognizing common setups?
- Did you focus on arithmetic/algebra basics more than hard questions?
I think part of my issue is that I treat every question like it deserves a full solution, when maybe the real skill is deciding how to solve it fast.
Would really appreciate any practical tips, especially from people who went from “okay at quant but inconsistent” to actually solid. Even small routine changes would help.
