When I was applying to colleges, I had to ask a couple of professors for recommendation letters. Honestly, it felt super awkward at first, but then I found a simple email template that changed everything.
Here's what I included in my email:
- Class Reminder: I mentioned which class I had with them and specific details that could jog their memory.
- Why I'm Applying: I briefly explained what I was applying for and why their recommendation would mean a lot to me.
- Deadline: I made sure to include the deadline for the letter.
- Brag Sheet: I attached a one-page brag sheet with my accomplishments and experiences that might help them write a powerful letter.
Most importantly, I added a gentle note saying something like, “If you’re too busy, I completely understand.” This made it easy for them to decline if needed, which I think really helped break the ice. The response was way more positive than I expected!
