I was reorganizing my docs last night and realized I have like 6 versions of the same extracurricular/community essay sitting in different folders. Now I’m trying to figure out how to reuse supplemental essays without making them feel copy-pasted, and honestly I can’t tell where the line is.
A lot of my prompts overlap: community, identity, academic interest, why major, sometimes even challenge/growth. I know the obvious answer is “tailor it,” but I’m stuck on how much tailoring actually needs to happen for it to still feel specific to each school.
For people who already did this successfully, what was your system?
- Did you reuse a core paragraph and just rewrite the intro/conclusion?
- Do you only reuse essays when the prompt is basically identical?
- How do you avoid repeating the exact same story across multiple schools?
- For “why us” supplements, is it normal to reuse the academic goals part and only swap out the college-specific details?
My bigger fear is that even if each essay is technically for a different prompt, admissions readers will feel the same voice/story structure over and over.
Right now I’m thinking of making a mini bank like:
- identity story
- community/service story
- academic curiosity story
- challenge/failure story
Then pulling pieces from each depending on the prompt. But I don’t know if that’s smart or if it’ll make everything sound too manufactured.
If anyone has a practical method for how to reuse supplemental essays, I’d seriously appreciate it. Even like a before/after example of what you changed between two similar prompts would help.
