Ever had a recommendation letter that just gave you bad vibes? You know, those letters that seem a little too generic or lack any real insight into who you are? I’ve dealt with a few of those, and I wish I had known what to look for sooner.
Here are some warning signs that could indicate you're about to receive a not-so-great letter of recommendation:
- Vague Language: If the recommender struggles to provide specifics about your accomplishments or skills, that's a red flag. A strong recommendation includes solid examples of your work and character.
- Too Short or Generic: If the letter is only a paragraph or two long, or if it sounds like the template they used was pulled off the internet, beware. A genuine letter should have personal touches that speak to your unique qualities.
- Negative Tone: Listen, not every letter needs to be a complete love fest, but if the tone feels off, it might reflect true hesitations. Phrases like 'will do his best' can be code for 'I'm not impressed.'
- Reluctance to Write: If they seem hesitant or uncomfortable when you ask, or if they delay in producing the letter, that's a huge red flag. You want someone who is genuinely excited to recommend you!
- Lack of Knowledge: If the recommender doesn't seem to know much about your work or achievements, that’s a problem. They should be able to discuss your strengths and contributions with confidence.
Trust your gut! If something feels off about the recommendation letter process, don’t be afraid to seek out someone else who can give you the support you truly deserve.
