The figures compare how workers travelled to work in a city in 2010 and 2025, showing the proportions using cars, buses, bicycles and walking.
Overall, cars remained the most common means of commuting, although their share fell substantially. Cycling and bus travel gained ground, while the proportion of workers walking was unchanged.
In 2010, half of all workers commuted by car, twice the percentage travelling by bus. By 2025, the car figure had declined to 35%, whereas the proportion using buses had risen by five percentage points to 30%. Consequently, the gap between the two modes narrowed from 25 percentage points to just five.
Cycling experienced the largest proportional increase, doubling from 10% to 20%. It overtook walking, which accounted for 15% of commuters in both years. Taken together, buses and bicycles represented 35% of journeys in 2010 but 50% in 2025. The combined increase in these two modes exactly matched the 15-percentage-point reduction in car commuting.
