The figures compare the membership of a library and the number of books borrowed in 2015 and 2025.
Overall, both membership and borrowing increased. However, the growth in membership was considerably greater in proportional terms, so the number of loans per member was lower in the later year.
The library had 2,000 members in 2015, rising to 3,000 a decade later. This increase of 1,000 represented growth of 50%. During the same period, the number of books borrowed climbed from 30,000 to 36,000, a gain of 6,000, or 20%. Membership therefore grew two and a half times as quickly as borrowing when the percentage changes are compared.
Expressed as a ratio, the figures amount to 15 books borrowed per member in 2015 and 12 in 2025. The library served more members and recorded more loans overall, but the average derived from the two totals fell by three books. This calculation does not imply that every member borrowed fewer books, since the charts provide only aggregate figures rather than individual borrowing records.
