Ideas to explore

  • Explain a specific, credible reason for missing the deadline, such as underestimating the research and organisation required.
  • Show what work is already complete and what remains, so the lecturer can see that the requested extra time has a clear purpose.
  • Acknowledge the course policy and ask about any required process, while keeping the tone respectful and accountable.

Suggested structure

  1. Open with a greeting and identify yourself and your course.
  2. State the missed deadline and apologise briefly.
  3. Explain why the project is unfinished and describe your progress.
  4. Request a specific extension and give a clear submission plan.
  5. Ask about any procedure, thank the lecturer, and close formally.

Band 7.0

Dear Mr. Gagan, I am Paramvir Singh, student of final year pursuing Ph.D. in Business Administration in your college. I am writing to you to apologize and seeking an extension for not meeting the deadline for the marketing project you assigned to me. First of all, I deeply regret for the inconvenience caused by me. The delay occurred because the information I first collected for the marketing project was not sufficiently reliable, so I had to review the sources and reorganise my analysis. This took longer than I expected, and I should have contacted you as soon as I realised that I would miss the deadline. I understand that submitting work late may cause difficulty when you are marking projects, and I accept responsibility for not informing you earlier.

I have now completed the background research and am working on the final analysis and proofreading. Could you please grant me an additional seven days to finish and submit the project? I will use this time to check the evidence carefully and ensure that the final report meets the course requirements. If an extension is not possible, I would be grateful if you could advise me about any late-submission procedure or penalty.

Thank you for considering my request. I apologize again for the delay and appreciate your understanding.

Yours sincerely, Paramvir Singh

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Correct the opening verb pattern by using parallel infinitives after “to,” and check that coordinated verbs have matching forms.
2
Practise common formal apology patterns, including “I regret the inconvenience” and “I apologise for the delay,” so you can select the correct construction.
3
Before sending a formal request, check that it includes a specific extension length or submission date, a brief work-status update, and a polite alternative if the request cannot be approved.
