- When buying is treated as compulsory, people may take on unsustainable debt or overlook the flexibility that renting can provide.

In several countries, individuals perceive the acquisition of a home as a more desirable option than renting, primarily because they regard homeownership as a significant symbol of status. This phenomenon is largely indicative of a broader societal trend wherein material possessions are increasingly valued as markers of personal success. While the desire to own property is understandable, I believe placing exceptional importance on ownership is ultimately negative, although buying a home can bring genuine benefits. One reason people favour ownership is the security it appears to offer. Homeowners are less exposed to sudden rent increases or a landlord's decision to end a tenancy, and they can adapt their homes to their needs. A house may also be viewed as a long-term asset: people hope its value will rise and provide financial support later in life. In communities where relatives and neighbours associate homeownership with adulthood and achievement, these practical advantages are reinforced by social pressure.
However, treating ownership as a measure of personal success can create serious problems. In expensive cities, people may take on large mortgages or spend most of their savings simply to avoid being seen as unsuccessful renters. This can leave them with little money for emergencies and make it difficult to move for a job or family need. It can also unfairly imply that renting is a failure, despite renting being a sensible choice for people who value flexibility or cannot afford a deposit.
Therefore, homeownership itself is not a negative goal; it can offer stability and independence. The problem is making it a social requirement. I would regard the situation as negative when people feel compelled to buy regardless of their finances. A society should respect both choices and judge success by more than property ownership.
