  2. Explain the main benefits, supporting each with a result for the young person.
  3. Present drawbacks such as interrupted study and expense, explaining when these risks are most likely.

Band 7.0

In this contemporary world, taking a gap year has become common among the young generation. They are inspired to take a gap year as a chance to work and travel when they complete high school and are on the verge of studying at university. I believe the advantages of this argument outweigh the disadvantages, as it can help young people develop independence and gain useful experience before they begin a demanding degree, although it can also delay their education and bring financial or academic risks.

One major benefit is that employment during a gap year gives school-leavers a clearer understanding of the working world. By earning their own money, they can become more responsible and may save towards university expenses. A job can also help them develop practical skills, such as communicating with colleagues and managing their time. Travel offers different benefits: encountering unfamiliar places and ways of life can broaden young people’s perspectives and make them more confident about living independently. These experiences may help them choose a university subject with greater purpose.

However, taking a year away from education can make it harder to return to academic study. Some students may lose their study habits or feel less motivated when their friends have already started university. There can also be considerable costs, particularly for those who travel without first saving enough money. In addition, a gap year is not automatically productive: without a plan, a young person might spend much of the year without gaining meaningful work experience or learning new skills.

Overall, the disadvantages are real, but I believe the benefits are greater when the year is planned carefully. Work and travel can build maturity, practical skills and confidence, which are valuable both at university and later in life. Young people should set clear goals and a realistic budget so that their gap year supports, rather than interrupts, their education.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Make the thesis more precise by naming the choice being evaluated: taking a gap year, rather than “this argument.”
2
Develop one benefit with a short cause-and-effect explanation, such as how workplace communication skills could help a young person at university.
3
For each drawback, connect it to a practical response: for example, explain how a budget or a planned return date could reduce the risk.
