Ideas to explore

  • Specialising can provide the depth of knowledge and practical competence required by demanding professional qualifications.
  • Additional subjects can develop transferable abilities, such as communication and collaboration across professional fields.
  • A balanced position is to prioritise core degree requirements while choosing a limited number of useful electives.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce both views and state a clear, qualified opinion.
  2. Explain why students may need to prioritise their main qualification.
  3. Present the benefits of studying beyond the major, supported by a relevant example.
  4. Conclude by defining a practical balance between specialist depth and broader learning.

Band 8.0

In contemporary society, opinions vary on whether university students should concentrate solely on their major or broaden their horizons by exploring other subjects. In my view, while I recognize the importance of the former, I lean towards the latter because students can benefit from diverse experiences before deciding on their primary focus. Advocates of specialization argue that devoting most of a student’s time to their major allows them to develop the in-depth knowledge required for advanced study and professional work. A demanding qualification may also involve substantial reading, assignments and practical training, so taking too many unrelated courses could leave students with less time to master essential material. This approach is especially persuasive in fields where expertise and technical competence are central.

However, studying additional subjects can broaden students’ understanding and help them identify interests they might otherwise overlook. For example, a science student who takes a course in communication may become better at presenting research, while an arts student could gain useful analytical skills through an introductory statistics class. These subjects can therefore complement, rather than distract from, a main qualification. Exploring different areas may also help students make a more informed decision about the direction they wish to take after graduation.

In my view, students should give priority to their main subject but still make room for carefully chosen courses beyond it. This balance protects the depth of learning needed for a qualification while allowing students to develop a wider range of knowledge and skills. Universities can support this by offering electives that fit around core requirements. Overall, concentrating exclusively on one subject is not always the best preparation for life after university; a focused but broad education is more beneficial.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
When presenting the specialisation view, connect the workload concern explicitly to your final compromise: explain that electives should be chosen around core requirements rather than replacing them.
2
Make examples do two jobs: name the additional subject and state the particular transferable skill it develops, as in communication supporting research presentations.
3
Review broad phrases such as “diverse experiences” and replace them where useful with task-specific wording such as “exposure to other disciplines.”
