Ideas to explore

  • Set ethical conditions for any permitted study: a significant potential benefit, no adequate alternative, and measures to minimise suffering.
  • Compare alternatives such as human cell or tissue studies, computer simulations and analysis of clinical data, while noting that their usefulness depends on the research question.
  • Distinguish limited, potentially valuable research from studies that cause serious suffering without a clear medical purpose.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the debate and state a qualified position.
  2. Explain when animal experiments might be justified and what limits should apply.
  3. Present alternatives and briefly discuss their current limitations.
  4. Conclude with a clear policy: last-resort use under strict safeguards, and a ban on cruel or unnecessary studies.
Useful vocabulary & examples
a last resort
An option used only when other suitable approaches are unavailable.

Animal testing should be considered only as a last resort.

minimise suffering
Reduce pain or distress as much as possible.

Researchers should follow procedures that minimise suffering.

computer simulations
Computer-based models used to represent or test processes.

Computer simulations may help researchers assess some effects of a treatment.

a compelling purpose
A strong and persuasive reason for doing something.

Experiments that cause harm should require a compelling purpose.

Task Prompt

Some people argue that all experimentation on animals is bad and should be outlawed. However, others believe that important scientific discoveries can be made from animal experiments. Can experimentation on animals be justified? Are there any alternatives?

Band 6.0

Some folks have debated that animal experiments should be banned because of their negative side of the environment. However, others believe that though it is a complex ethical issue, the experimentation on animals can be beneficial for scientific reasons. In this essay, I will give the reasons why it can be justified and I will also discuss whether alternatives can be used.

Animal experiments may be justified when researchers need to understand how a new medicine affects a whole living body. A treatment that appears safe in a cell sample may cause unexpected effects in organs or interact with other systems. Carefully controlled animal studies can therefore provide useful evidence before a medicine is tested on people, and this may help prevent serious harm. They have also contributed to medical knowledge and the development of treatments.

Nevertheless, this does not mean that animals should be used whenever it is convenient. They can experience pain and distress, so experiments should only take place when the expected benefit is important and no suitable alternative exists. Governments and research institutions should require ethical review, use the smallest number of animals possible, and provide humane care. Cosmetic testing, for example, is difficult to defend when it is not essential for protecting human health.

There are several alternatives. Scientists can use human cells and tissue in laboratory tests, as well as computer models to predict how substances may behave. Some medicines can also be studied with adult volunteers after initial safety checks. These approaches can reduce animal use and are sometimes more relevant to humans. However, they cannot yet reproduce every interaction within a complete living organism, so they may not replace all animal studies.

In conclusion, animal experimentation can be justified in limited cases when it is necessary, carefully regulated, and likely to produce significant medical benefits. At the same time, alternatives should be used wherever possible, and animal testing should be reduced as technology improves.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Rewrite the opening reason for banning experiments so it names the concern accurately, such as pain, distress, or animal welfare.
2
Develop the medical-benefit argument with one specific example of the kind of evidence animal studies can provide, without making unsupported claims.
3
Connect alternatives to your position by explaining that they should be preferred whenever they can answer the research question reliably.
