Band 9.0

The debate regarding the optimal path to a successful career has elicited varying opinions among individuals. Some contend that pursuing higher education at a university or college is the most advantageous route, while others advocate for entering the workforce immediately after completing high school. While there are numerous merits associated with obtaining employment right after high school, I believe that higher education generally offers a stronger foundation for long-term career success.

Those who support working straight after school point to the value of practical experience. Young people can develop workplace skills, learn professional expectations and begin earning money rather than paying tuition fees. This may be particularly beneficial in occupations where employers provide structured training, such as some trades. Starting work early can also help school-leavers discover which roles suit them before committing to a longer course of study.

By contrast, university and college can provide specialised knowledge and qualifications that are essential for many professions. For example, people aiming to become doctors, engineers or teachers usually need formal education before they can enter their chosen fields. Beyond meeting these requirements, higher education can strengthen skills such as research, communication and independent problem-solving. These capabilities may open doors to a wider range of positions and support progression into more senior roles over time.

In my view, although immediate employment is a sensible choice for some school-leavers, further education is usually the better route when it is relevant to a person's career goals. The two paths are not entirely separate: students can gain experience through internships or part-time work while studying. Overall, choosing education that connects to a realistic career plan offers a sound balance of qualifications and preparation for employment.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace the abstract opening wording with a direct statement of the two routes, then state your view in a separate sentence.
2
In the university paragraph, explain one profession-specific example in more detail, showing why its required qualification affects career entry.
3
Make the final link between study and employment concrete by briefly naming an internship or part-time work placement as a way to gain experience while studying.
