Band 8.0

When they finish school, teenagers face the dilemma of whether to get a job or continue their education. While there are benefits to getting a job straight after school, there are also good reasons why it might be beneficial to go to college or university. The option to start work straight after school is attractive because it offers income and practical experience. I nevertheless favour university when it is suited to the intended profession.

University study can be the most suitable route where a profession requires substantial theoretical knowledge or a recognised qualification. A prospective doctor, for example, needs structured education and supervised training before taking responsibility for patients. Higher education can also give students time to explore a field, analyse difficult problems and receive feedback before entering professional practice.

Starting work after school offers different benefits. A young person can earn an income, learn workplace expectations and discover whether a particular type of job suits them. Practical training or an apprenticeship may provide a direct route into occupations where experience is central. This can be preferable to paying for a degree chosen without a clear understanding of its purpose.

Neither route guarantees a successful career. A graduate may still need practical experience and appropriate job opportunities, while a school leaver may find that promotion later requires further training. Success also depends on how well the route matches the person's goals and the standards of the occupation. It would therefore be misleading to compare all degrees with all immediate jobs as if each category had one outcome.

In my opinion, university is the better general option for someone with a clear interest in a field that requires or benefits from advanced study. Nevertheless, direct employment is a legitimate choice when it includes genuine learning and a realistic progression path. The decision should be made through information about actual courses and jobs, not through pressure to copy other students.

In conclusion, higher education offers depth and credentials, while early employment provides income and practical experience. I favour university when it fits the career goal, but recognise that structured workplace learning can be the stronger route for some individuals.
