Currently, divergent views exist concerning the appropriate conduct of the younger generation in society. Some advocate for adherence to traditional societal norms by teenagers and adolescents, while others espouse individualistic behavior. Personally, I believe that every individual should have the freedom to express their true selves and pursue their unique interests. On one hand, individuals who support traditions often value continuity with previous generations. These benefits need not remove personal choice.
Traditions can give young people a sense of connection with earlier generations. A family celebration, shared language or customary activity may carry memories that are difficult to replace once they disappear. Learning why a practice matters can help young people understand their community and participate in it. This provides a reasonable argument for encouraging traditions rather than dismissing them simply because they are old.
However, following every custom without question can restrict individual choices. A tradition may no longer fit a person's circumstances, and some expectations may unfairly limit education, work or personal expression. Young people need opportunities to consider these expectations and decide whether they should be continued, adapted or rejected. Respecting a culture does not require accepting every practice unchanged.
The two views are therefore not entirely incompatible. A young person can take part in a meaningful celebration while choosing a different career or style of life from previous generations. Older people can explain the purpose of a tradition, and younger people can suggest ways to keep it relevant. This dialogue may preserve the underlying value more effectively than compulsory participation.
In my opinion, individual choice should generally prevail, provided that people respect others and meet legitimate responsibilities. Traditions are worth learning about, but their continuation should depend on understanding and voluntary participation rather than an assumption that age alone makes them right.
In conclusion, inherited practices can support belonging and continuity, while freedom allows young people to develop their own identities. Encouragement, explanation and thoughtful adaptation offer a better balance than either rigid conformity or rejecting every tradition.
