Ideas to explore

  • Link medical research to prevention, diagnosis and treatment, explaining how each can affect people’s health.
  • Use clean-energy research as an example of science improving daily life while addressing pollution and sustainability.
  • Acknowledge that basic research may have delayed applications, then connect its support to responsible long-term benefits.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce a clear degree of agreement and state the main reasons.
  2. Develop one paragraph on direct improvements to health and living conditions.
  3. Develop a second paragraph on science’s role in long-term social challenges and accessible benefits.
  4. Concede the value of basic research, explain how it fits your position, and conclude with a concise summary.

Band 9.0

Improving people’s quality of life should be considered the paramount objective of science. I strongly concur with this standpoint and assert that enhancing people’s well-being and living standards should be the predominant goal of scientific endeavours. Primarily, I am of the opinion that scientific advancements significantly contribute to enhancing various aspects of human life. In practice, this means directing research towards challenges that affect people’s health, safety and everyday circumstances. For example, medical science can help prevent and treat illness, while research into clean energy can reduce pollution and make homes and transport more sustainable. These outcomes benefit individuals directly and can also improve the conditions in which whole communities live.

A further reason is that science can help societies respond to problems that threaten people’s future well-being. Research into food production, climate and disease can give governments and communities better evidence for planning and decision-making. In this way, scientific work is not limited to creating new inventions; it can also identify risks and help people use resources more responsibly. Its value is greatest when discoveries are accessible and relevant to a broad range of people, rather than serving only a small or wealthy group.

Admittedly, scientific curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake are also important. Some discoveries may not have an obvious practical use at first, but they can lead to valuable applications later. However, this does not conflict with my position: basic research deserves support when it forms part of a responsible scientific system that ultimately considers its effects on society.

Overall, I strongly agree that improving people’s lives should be science’s leading aim. Research should be guided by human needs while leaving room for exploration, with its benefits shared fairly.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace one of the opening statements of agreement with a direct thesis that names the main reasons you will discuss.
2
Develop one example in each body paragraph using a clear chain: scientific research, practical outcome, and benefit to people.
3
Keep the concession about basic research, then explain explicitly how supporting it can still serve the wider aim of improving lives.
