The following report presents information on the urban population percentages in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia from 1970 to 2040, as depicted in the provided graph. Overall, the trend shows a consistent increase in urban population percentages for all four Asian countries from 1970 to 2040, with Malaysia projected to have the highest percentage. However, the increases are not uniform throughout the period.
In 1970, the Philippines and Malaysia both had about 30% of their populations living in cities, compared with roughly 18% in Thailand and 13% in Indonesia. Malaysia’s figure rose steadily, reaching around 60% in 2000 and approximately 70% in 2010. It is then forecast to increase further, to just over 80% by 2040.
The Philippines reached a high of about 48% in 1990, before declining to roughly 42% in 2010. After that, its urban share is expected to rise, reaching approximately 56% in 2040. Indonesia’s proportion increased more rapidly after 2000, from about 30% to 43% in 2010, and is projected to reach around 64% by the end of the period. Thailand remained comparatively low, hovering near 30% between 1990 and 2020, before a predicted rise to 50% in 2040. Thus, Malaysia remains highest, while Thailand is expected to remain lowest.
