Ideas to explore

  • Separate features that remain from those that have been added, relocated or replaced; the business units and car park remain, while the IT centre gives way to an innovation centre.
  • Describe the shift in land use: open grassland in the northwest is now substantially developed, while trees remain in the southwest.
  • Treat transport access as a key change, noting the cycle path, station and bus stop, while also mentioning the railway that continues to border the site.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the maps and identify the time comparison.
  2. Give an overview of the most important changes: redevelopment and improved access.
  3. Describe the 2008 arrangement by area, covering open land and existing facilities.
  4. Compare the current layout, highlighting retained and replaced buildings.
  5. Finish with access changes and any transport feature that remains.

Band 7.0

Two maps illustrate the transformations that a particular place experienced between 2008 and today. In general, the area has experienced minimal development regarding its layout. In addition, it has become more convenient compared to how it looked in the year 2008. The first change in Science Park is that the grassland has been taken away, with a research and development building and a university hub now occupying the northern part of the site. The offices remain in the north-east, although the reception area shown beside them in 2008 is no longer labelled. The business units and central car park have stayed in broadly the same positions, while the road continues to run around the eastern edge. In the south-west, the former IT centre has been replaced by an innovation centre, and woodland remains in this part of the park. The cyber security facility is still in the south-east. A cycle path has also been added across the middle of the park, connecting the business-unit area with the eastern route, and a bus stop is now shown beside the road on the eastern boundary. Finally, although a railway already ran along the southern edge in 2008, a station has been built next to it.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Revise the overview so it acknowledges both the broadly similar layout and the major changes in facilities and transport.
2
Replace general judgements such as “more convenient” with the specific mapped additions, including the cycle path, bus stop, and station.
3
Check each area against the maps before describing it, then group details by location to avoid omissions or unclear comparisons.
