Ideas to explore

  • Separate features that remain from those that have been added, relocated or replaced; the business units and car park remain, while the IT centre gives way to an innovation centre.
  • Describe the shift in land use: open grassland in the northwest is now substantially developed, while trees remain in the southwest.
  • Treat transport access as a key change, noting the cycle path, station and bus stop, while also mentioning the railway that continues to border the site.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the maps and identify the time comparison.
  2. Give an overview of the most important changes: redevelopment and improved access.
  3. Describe the 2008 arrangement by area, covering open land and existing facilities.
  4. Compare the current layout, highlighting retained and replaced buildings.
  5. Finish with access changes and any transport feature that remains.

Band 7.0

The maps illustrate how Science Park has developed from 2008 to the present. Overall, it is clear that there have been several changes; the most noticeable change is cycle path construction and the decline in grasslands. In 2008, to the north-west of the park, there were a lot of grasslands and woodlands, which provided fresh air. By today, much of this open land has been developed, and only a few wooded areas remain. Offices and a reception area occupied the north-east in 2008; today, offices remain in this part of the park, while a research and development centre and a university hub have been added nearby. The business units have remained in the west, and the central car park is still present. However, the IT centre in the south-west has been replaced by an innovation centre. The cyber security building remains in the south-east, although the map now labels it as cyber security. Transport and access have also changed. Cycle paths now extend around the park and connect several facilities, whereas in 2008 the park had no cycle paths. A bus stop has been added on the eastern side, and a station is now located on the railway along the southern edge. Overall, the park retains some of its original facilities but has gained new research, transport and leisure-related features.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Name each key map change together with its location, for example, the IT centre in the south-west becoming the innovation centre.
2
Describe the open land and trees as separate features so the reader can distinguish the loss of grassland from the remaining woodland.
3
Replace broad or informal phrases such as “a lot of” with concise map-report wording such as “an extensive area of.”
