Many societies teach minors that they can accomplish any goal if they put enough efforts in it. This act can be advantageous to children, because it motivates them to try harder and be more resilient in the face of hardships. However, this message can push children strictly, causing them to feel like they are never doing enough.
The main advantage is that the message gives children a reason to practise. A pupil who struggles with a musical instrument may continue after a disappointing lesson if they believe improvement is possible. Effort is something the child can influence, unlike an immediate comparison with the most talented person in the class. This can make a difficult activity feel manageable rather than permanently beyond reach.
The message can also help children respond constructively to setbacks. Instead of assuming that one poor result defines their ability, they may try another strategy or ask for feedback. Adults can strengthen this benefit by noticing a useful process, such as regular practice or careful revision. Praise that identifies what helped is more informative than simply telling a child they will become the best.
The disadvantage is the word anything. Opportunities depend on resources, other people's decisions and circumstances as well as determination. If a child is told that effort always produces success, an unsuccessful outcome may seem to prove personal laziness. They may continue pursuing an unsuitable goal rather than adjust it, or neglect rest because they believe every spare moment must be used to try harder.
A more realistic message preserves encouragement without promising control over every result. Adults can explain that effort improves the chance of progress and that changing a plan is sometimes sensible. A child who does not win a competition can still recognise skills gained and choose what to practise next. This teaches persistence alongside judgement.
In conclusion, encouragement can develop confidence and productive habits, but an unlimited promise creates pressure and misplaced blame. Children benefit more from being told that effort matters than from being assured that effort makes every ambition achievable.
