Ideas to explore

  • A fuel-price rise may discourage optional car journeys, but it can affect people with limited transport choices more heavily.
  • Frequent, affordable and reliable public transport gives commuters a practical alternative to driving.
  • Combine congestion measures, such as peak-time charges, with investments in cleaner vehicles and safe walking or cycling routes.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the problem and state clearly whether higher petrol prices are the best solution.
  2. Explain one benefit and one limitation of increasing fuel prices.
  3. Develop public transport as a main alternative, linking service improvements to reduced car use.
  4. Add one or two complementary measures for congestion and pollution.
  5. Conclude by comparing a price increase alone with a combined approach.
Useful vocabulary & examples
a practical alternative to driving
A realistic option that people can use instead of travelling by car.

Frequent buses would give commuters a practical alternative to driving.

peak-time charges
Fees applied to vehicles travelling in busy areas during the most congested hours.

Peak-time charges could reduce the number of cars entering the city centre.

emissions standards
Official limits on the pollutants that vehicles or other sources may release.

Stricter emissions standards can help reduce pollution from vehicles.

place a heavier burden on
To make a cost or difficulty affect a particular group more severely.

A large fuel-price increase could place a heavier burden on lower-income drivers.

Task Prompt

Band 6.0

The problem of traffic and pollution is very complex. Although raising the price of gasoline can be an effective way to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. One alternative that could be effective is to improve public transportation. By making public transport cheaper, more timely and more convenient, more people can be encouraged to use their cars less often. However, I do not believe that increasing petrol prices is the best solution on its own. Higher costs may discourage some drivers from making unnecessary journeys, but people who need to drive to work or live in areas with few transport options may have little choice. In addition, a price increase could place a heavier burden on people with lower incomes.

Improving public transport is likely to be more effective if the service is reliable and reaches residential areas as well as city centres. Governments could run buses and trains more frequently and offer affordable travel passes. This would give commuters a practical alternative to driving. For shorter trips, safer cycle lanes and wider pavements could also encourage people to leave their cars at home.

Cities can also reduce congestion by charging vehicles to enter busy central areas at peak times. The money raised could help fund public transport. To tackle pollution directly, authorities should encourage cleaner vehicles and enforce stricter emissions standards. These measures address the sources of the problem rather than relying only on fuel prices.

In conclusion, higher petrol prices may help reduce some car journeys, but they are not the best answer by themselves. A combination of better public transport, safer routes for walking and cycling, and targeted restrictions would be fairer and more effective.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Check every sentence beginning with “although”: make sure it is joined to a main clause, or remove the subordinating word if you intend a complete standalone sentence.
2
Explain the effect of each proposed measure in a clear cause-and-effect link, such as how frequent buses could make commuting without a car practical.
3
Use parallel, natural descriptions when listing service improvements—for example, “cheaper, more reliable and more convenient”—and check that each adjective fits the noun.
