Many university students now choose to divide their time between their major studies and exploring unrelated subjects. In this essay, I will discuss both views in detail and in my opinion, it is essential for undergraduates to have a wide range of knowledge to better prepare themselves for the future. Some argue that focusing solely on a qualification is the wisest choice. University courses are demanding, and students who concentrate on their core subjects can build a deeper understanding of their field, achieve stronger results, and devote more time to projects, internships, or professional examinations. This may be particularly important in subjects such as medicine or engineering, where specialist knowledge is essential and workloads are heavy.
However, limiting study to one discipline can leave graduates less prepared for a complex and changing workplace. Learning beyond a major can develop transferable skills and help students see problems from different perspectives. For instance, a science student who studies communication or economics may become better at explaining research and understanding how it affects society. Such breadth can also help students discover interests they might later pursue.
In my view, students should prioritise their qualification while making room for a manageable amount of study in other fields. This need not mean taking on an equally demanding second course; electives, online classes, or reading can provide valuable exposure without undermining academic performance. Universities can support this balance by offering flexible options and advising students to choose subjects that complement their main studies.
Overall, a strong qualification remains the central goal, but some carefully chosen learning outside a major offers broader skills and adaptability. A balanced approach is therefore more beneficial than either ignoring other subjects or spreading one's efforts too thinly.
