Ideas to explore
- Explain how regular, enjoyable PE can help children build activity habits that may continue beyond school.
- Show why PE alone has limits: food choices and time spent in sedentary activities also shape children’s routines.
- Suggest a combined response: inclusive school activities, practical food education and support for exercise outside school.
Suggested structure
- Introduce the issue and give a qualified position: agree that PE helps, but not that it is sufficient alone.
- Develop the benefits of PE, linking regular participation to fitness, skills and habit formation.
- Explain the limitations of relying only on PE, using diet and non-school activity as relevant factors.
- Offer complementary actions that respond to those limitations.
- Conclude by restating the qualified position and summarising why a broader approach is preferable.

The increasing number of overweight individuals is placing a significant strain on the healthcare system due to the associated health issues. Some argue that the best way to prevent this problem is by introducing more physical education (PE) lessons in schools. While I agree that PE plays an important role in promoting a healthy lifestyle, I do not, however, consider it sufficient on its own; reducing obesity requires coordinated action at school, at home and in the wider community.
Regular PE gives children structured opportunities to develop fitness, learn basic skills and experience the benefits of exercise. Because habits formed early can continue into adulthood, engaging lessons may also help physical activity feel enjoyable rather than a chore. This can be especially valuable for pupils who have limited access to sports facilities outside school. For these reasons, increasing the quality and frequency of PE can be a meaningful part of prevention.
Nevertheless, additional lessons alone cannot address all the factors that contribute to excess weight. Children’s diets are shaped by the food available at home and school, while screen-based leisure and limited opportunities for safe outdoor activity can also reduce how much they move. Moreover, some pupils may not participate fully if lessons are repetitive or focused only on competitive sport. Schools should therefore offer inclusive activities suited to different abilities and teach practical skills, such as making balanced food choices. Parents and local authorities also have a role in supporting healthy routines and accessible places to exercise.
In conclusion, I agree that more effective PE should be included in the school curriculum because it can establish healthy habits and increase children’s activity. However, it is not the best solution in isolation. A broader approach that combines enjoyable school exercise with healthier food choices and support beyond the classroom is more likely to address the problem effectively.
