Ideas to explore
- Explain how regular, enjoyable PE can help children build activity habits that may continue beyond school.
- Show why PE alone has limits: food choices and time spent in sedentary activities also shape children’s routines.
- Suggest a combined response: inclusive school activities, practical food education and support for exercise outside school.
Suggested structure
- Introduce the issue and give a qualified position: agree that PE helps, but not that it is sufficient alone.
- Develop the benefits of PE, linking regular participation to fitness, skills and habit formation.
- Explain the limitations of relying only on PE, using diet and non-school activity as relevant factors.
- Offer complementary actions that respond to those limitations.
- Conclude by restating the qualified position and summarising why a broader approach is preferable.

An increasing number of obesity cases is building pressure on the healthcare system, which make an effort to deal with the health issues involved. Opinions are widely divided on whether should schools add more sporting activities in their curriculum or not. Personally, I entirely side with this sentiment because of the following reasons. First and foremost, adding more physical education lessons can help children develop a routine of exercise before sedentary habits become established. Many pupils spend several hours sitting in classrooms and then continue sitting at home, so scheduled activity gives them regular movement that they might not otherwise get. It can also improve fitness and teach practical skills such as warming up, choosing suitable activities and exercising safely. These benefits may reduce the likelihood of weight-related problems later in life.
Moreover, school lessons can reach children from a wide range of backgrounds, including those whose families may not be able to pay for sports clubs. A varied programme, with team games, dance and individual exercise, could help pupils find an activity they enjoy and are more likely to continue outside school. Physical education can also support mental wellbeing and cooperation, making it valuable beyond its possible effect on weight.
Admittedly, extra lessons alone will not solve obesity. Children’s diets, family routines and access to safe places to exercise also influence their health. Schools should therefore teach basic nutrition alongside physical activity, while governments and communities can support healthy choices beyond the classroom. Nevertheless, these limitations are reasons to combine measures, rather than to dismiss the role of schools.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that increasing physical education in the curriculum is an effective way to address the problem. It can establish lifelong habits and improve pupils’ overall wellbeing, although it should form part of a broader approach to health.
