Ideas to explore

  • A longer weekend can provide time for rest, relationships, childcare, and personal interests.
  • Reducing unnecessary meetings and clarifying priorities may help teams use working hours more efficiently.
  • Continuous-staffing workplaces may need staggered shifts or a trial period to protect service coverage.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the proposal in your own words and state your position clearly.
  2. Explain how a shorter week could benefit workers’ wellbeing and personal responsibilities.
  3. Show how employers might benefit through more focused working practices.
  4. Acknowledge a practical limitation, such as the need for continuous staffing, and suggest a feasible response.
  5. Conclude by restating your position with the condition that implementation should be planned.

Band 8.0

Many people argue that the workweek should be shortened to provide workers with a longer weekend. However, I strongly disagree with this idea, as it could lead to various issues in terms of the economy and the standard of living. One of the most significant drawbacks of a shorter workweek is the potential decline in productivity. If employees work fewer hours, businesses may produce less, particularly in industries where output depends directly on time spent working or where customer demand must be met throughout the week. To maintain their current level of service, employers might need to hire additional staff, which could increase operating costs. Smaller companies may find it especially difficult to absorb these expenses, and they could respond by raising prices or reducing investment.

A shorter week could also affect workers’ earnings and household budgets. Some employees, especially those paid by the hour, might receive lower wages if their working hours were cut. Even if employers kept salaries unchanged, higher business costs could eventually be passed on to consumers through more expensive goods and services. This would be concerning for people whose incomes are already limited, as a longer weekend would offer little benefit if everyday expenses became harder to manage. In addition, compressing the same workload into fewer days could create pressure rather than improve employees’ wellbeing.

Admittedly, extra time away from work may help some people rest and spend more time with family. Nevertheless, this benefit does not necessarily require a shorter working week for everyone. Employers could instead offer flexible schedules, additional leave, or remote work where appropriate. These options would give workers more control over their time without reducing working hours across the economy. Overall, I disagree with shortening the workweek because it could reduce output, put pressure on earnings and prices, and create new challenges for businesses and workers.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Add one concrete, clearly hypothetical example of a time-dependent service, such as a shop needing staff coverage across its opening hours, to illustrate the productivity argument.
2
Make the economic chain explicit: explain how extra staffing costs could affect prices or investment, while keeping the outcome appropriately qualified with “may” or “could.”
3
Review the introduction for broad phrases such as “various issues in terms of” and replace them with concise previews of the two main lines of argument.
