Band 8.0

In today’s fast-paced world, the optimal length of the workweek is a topic of ongoing debate. While some believe long hours are necessary for productivity, I strongly advocate for a shorter workweek with longer weekends. This approach offers numerous benefits for both employee well-being and overall societal health. One compelling reason for a shorter workweek is that it can improve productivity rather than reduce it. When employees have enough time to rest, they are more likely to return focused and motivated. In contrast, excessive working hours can lead to fatigue, which may cause mistakes and lower the quality of work. A shorter week could therefore help employers achieve better results, even if staff spend fewer hours at work.

A longer weekend would also give people more time to care for their physical and mental health, spend time with family, and pursue interests outside their jobs. These activities are not merely leisure: they can reduce stress and help workers maintain a sustainable balance between their professional and personal lives. In turn, healthier employees may take fewer days off and remain committed to their jobs.

Admittedly, reducing the working week could create difficulties for businesses that need continuous staffing or have strict deadlines. However, this does not mean that every worker should follow the same schedule. Employers could reorganise shifts, set clearer priorities, or introduce flexible hours so that essential services continue to operate. Any change should be planned carefully rather than implemented without regard to the needs of different industries.

Overall, I agree that the working week should be shorter and the weekend longer. With thoughtful planning, this change can support employee well-being while maintaining, and potentially improving, productivity.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Add one specific illustration of how shift reorganisation could maintain coverage while giving employees a longer weekend.
2
Make the relationship between reduced fatigue and improved work quality explicit in one sentence, so the productivity argument is especially easy to follow.
3
Review broad phrases such as “overall societal health” and replace them with wording that names the particular benefit you mean.
