Anyone else looking for SAT reading and writing tips and feeling like every video says the same vague stuff? The biggest thing that helped me was stopping random practice and getting super specific about why I missed questions.
For Reading, I started doing these 3 things:
- Read for structure, not details first. I’d quickly note what each paragraph was doing: example, contrast, claim, evidence, shift, etc. That made main idea and purpose questions way easier.
- Answer from the passage, not your memory. If I couldn’t point to the line that proved my answer, I treated it like a guess.
- Be aggressive with wrong answers. Usually 3 choices are wrong for a very specific reason: too extreme, partly true, off-topic, or reverses the idea.
For Writing, my score moved faster because the rules repeat a lot more:
- Learn the high-frequency grammar rules cold. Especially commas, semicolons, colons, subject-verb agreement, pronouns, and verb tense consistency.
- Say the sentence out loud in your head. It sounds obvious, but this caught awkward wording and redundancy way better than overthinking.
- Shortest isn’t always right, but wordy is usually suspicious. A lot of SAT Writing questions reward clarity and concision.
What helped most was keeping a tiny error log in my notes app. Not just the question number, but stuff like:
missed author's attitude because I rushed tone wordspicked a choice that sounded nice but wasn't fully supportedforgot semicolon needs 2 independent clauses
After like a week, patterns showed up fast. My practice became way more useful because I wasn’t just doing more questions, I was fixing the same mistakes.
Best tip honestly: review slower than you practice.
