Anyone else trying to build a college application timeline senior year without feeling like every deadline is sneaking up on you? I made myself a simple plan this year, and it helped a lot because I stopped treating the whole process like one giant scary project and started breaking it into smaller deadlines.
This is basically the application strategy I wish I had at the start of senior fall:
- Late spring / early summer before senior year
Make your college list first. Not perfect, just realistic. I did three groups: reach, target, likely. Then I checked which schools had Early Action, Early Decision, rolling, or regular deadlines. That alone made the rest of my timeline way easier.
Also: open a doc and start tracking requirements. Essay? Resume? portfolio? test scores? recommendations? interview? honors college? Put it all in one place. - Summer
Best time for the personal statement. I know everyone says this, but they are right. Even if your draft is bad, getting words down early saves you so much stress later. Summer is also good for building your activities list and updating your resume.
If you need recommendations, start thinking now about which teachers actually know you well. Don’t wait until everyone asks the same 2 teachers in September. - August
When the Common App opens, fill in the boring sections first: profile, activities, family, classes, etc. It takes longer than people think. I also made a separate checklist for each school’s supplement essays because they blur together fast. - September
Ask for recommendation letters early and politely. Give teachers a resume or short brag sheet so they have details to write about. If your school uses Naviance, Scoir, or something similar, make sure you know the process for sending docs.
This is also when I started finalizing my early application schools. If you are doing ED/EA, you really do not want to still be choosing schools in late October. - October
This was my biggest work month. I tried to finish all Early Action/Early Decision applications by the middle of October, not the night they were due. That gave me buffer time for edits, technical issues, and random missing pieces.

Submit early apps if you haven’t already, then immediately switch to regular decision supplements. Don’t take a “break” so long that December becomes chaos. Also double check that recommendation letters, transcripts, and test scores were actually sent. - December through January
Regular decision season. At this point, the best strategy is staying organized more than writing perfectly. I used a spreadsheet with columns for deadline, essay status, fee, portal login, and whether materials were received. Super basic, but it saved me. - After submitting
Keep checking your applicant portals. A lot of people think submitting is the end, but schools can still mark things missing. Also keep up your grades. Senior slide is very real and not worth it.
A few things that helped me the most:
- Set your own deadlines 7-10 days before the real ones
- Reuse supplement ideas, but don’t copy-paste carelessly
- Keep one master spreadsheet for every school
- Ask 1-2 people for essay feedback, not 8 different people
- Do the hardest supplement first, not last
The biggest mistake I almost made was thinking I had “plenty of time” in September. Senior year gets busy fast.
