I kept searching for TOEFL writing task 2 tips and most lists felt way too generic, so I made myself a short resource with the stuff that actually improved my essays. If you are stuck on the independent writing task, these helped me the most:
- Pick the easier side fast. Don’t choose the “smarter” opinion. Choose the side you can support with 2 clear reasons and examples in under a minute.
- Use a simple 4-paragraph structure. Intro, body 1, body 2, conclusion. I used to overcomplicate it and then run out of time.
- Make topic sentences obvious. The examiner should instantly know your point. Something like One major reason is that... is boring but it works.
- Use specific fake examples if needed. They do not need to be academically perfect. A personal example or a realistic situation is enough if it clearly supports your reason.
- Aim for clarity over fancy vocabulary. Big words only help if you use them naturally. Clean grammar + clear logic scored better for me than trying to sound advanced.
- Link ideas, but don’t force connectors everywhere. A few natural transitions like however, for example, and as a result are enough.
- Save 3 minutes to check common mistakes. I always looked for verb tense, singular/plural, and missing articles because those were my usual errors.
What also helped was practicing with a timer and reusing a basic template:
Intro: paraphrase + opinion
Body 1: reason + example
Body 2: reason + example
Conclusion: restate opinion simply
If anyone wants, I can also post the mini checklist I used before submitting each essay.
