The whole college application timeline senior year thing is starting to feel way more confusing than I expected, and I am honestly trying to figure out if I am behind or just overthinking everything. I keep searching for a realistic college application timeline senior year plan, but most lists online either feel too vague or way too perfect.
Right now I am trying to map out what I should be doing month by month, and I cannot tell if my order makes sense. My current plan is basically:
- finish my college list before school gets too busy
- decide where I am doing EA/ED/Regular
- ask teachers for rec letters early
- work on the personal statement in late summer
- use fall for supplements and polishing everything
- try not to destroy my grades while doing all of that
But then I start spiraling because people around me are at completely different stages. A few already have polished Common App essays, some have not even finalized a list, and one person is talking about interviews and I have not even opened half my supplement prompts yet.
The main things I am stuck on are:
- How early should your college list actually be finalized?
- Is it dumb to draft supplements before school starts, even if prompts might change a little?
- When did you ask for recommendation letters, and what did you give your teachers to help them?
- How many schools did you try to fully finish before your first deadline?
- Did you schedule SAT or ACT retakes into senior fall, or was that too chaotic?
I am also worried about making a timeline that looks organized but falls apart the second classes, activities, and normal life hit. A lot of advice says stuff like just stay ahead, which is true, but not actually helpful when I am trying to decide what matters most in August vs September vs October.
If anyone already went through this, what did your real timeline look like? Not the ideal version, but the version that actually happened. Like, when did essays get serious, when did supplements pile up, and when did you start feeling like deadlines were close enough to be scary?
Also, if you could redo senior fall, what would you start earlier? Essays? Activity list? Financial aid stuff? I feel like FAFSA/CSS, applications, schoolwork, and scholarship deadlines are all about to crash into each other.
I would seriously appreciate even a super simple breakdown of what you did by month. I do better with concrete examples than general advice, and right now I just need to know what is realistic and what is me being dramatic.
