Common App mistakes to avoid are usually not the dramatic ones. It’s the small stuff that makes your app feel rushed, so I made myself a last-minute checklist and it honestly caught more than I expected.
- Activity descriptions that turned into buzzwords. After cutting characters, some of mine barely sounded human. Read every entry out loud.
- Repeating the same story everywhere. If your personal essay, supplemental essays, and activities all show the exact same trait, it can feel one-note.
- Leaving honors too vague. Don’t assume readers know every abbreviation, competition, or school-specific award.
- Wrong college name in supplements. Obvious one, but still probably the most common app mistake to avoid if you’re recycling drafts.
- Trying to sound way too formal. My essay got better when it sounded like me and not like I was giving a TED Talk.
- Ignoring the tiny sections. Family info, courses, testing, majors, and the additional info box matter more than people think.
- Using additional info badly. It should clarify context, not become another full essay.
- Not checking how the whole app reads together. A strong application plan means looking for balance, not just polishing each piece separately.
What helped me most was pretending I was an admissions reader seeing everything for the first time. I checked for repetition, weird phrasing, and whether each section added something new.
If you’re close to submitting, do one full read in preview mode and one read on your phone. I caught formatting issues and a typo in an activity title that way.
