A pretty balanced list is usually 8-12 schools split like this:
- 2-3 reach
- 4-6 target/match
- 2-3 likely/safety
Your number should go up if you need a lot of financial aid, are applying to super competitive majors, or your safeties are not affordable.
Your number can go down if you have a clear first choice, solid stats for your list, and enough time to make each application strong.
What helped me was making a spreadsheet with 4 columns: acceptance rate, net price, average GPA/test range, and why I would actually attend. If I could not answer that last one, I cut the school.
A shorter, thoughtful list is usually better than 20 rushed applications.
