Last fall I had a full spreadsheet meltdown because I could not decide how many colleges should I apply to. I kept seeing people say 8, 12, 20, and it made me feel like there was some magic number. For me, there really wasn’t.
I ended up applying to 11 schools, and honestly that was the upper limit of what I could handle without my essays getting worse. My final list was 3 safeties, 5 targets, and 3 reaches. That balance helped a lot because I wasn’t putting all my hope into super selective schools, but I also wasn’t applying to random colleges just to make the number bigger.
What helped me most was asking two questions for every school:
- Would I actually be happy there?
- Can I realistically finish a strong application for it?
If the answer to either one was no, I cut it.
I also learned that how many colleges you should apply to depends a lot on your situation:
- If you need a lot of financial aid, it can make sense to apply to more.
- If you have rolling admissions or a clear in-state option, you may need fewer.
- If every school has 3 extra supplements, be realistic about burnout.
One mistake I almost made was keeping schools on my list just because other people were applying there. Once I stopped doing that, my list got smaller and better.
So if anyone is stuck on how many colleges should I apply to, my honest answer is: enough that you have real options, but not so many that your application quality drops. For me that was 11. For someone else it could easily be 6 or 15.
If you want, I can also share the simple spreadsheet setup I used to narrow my list down.
