How many colleges should I apply to? I was googling that exact question all fall because everyone around me kept giving totally different answers, and it made my whole application strategy feel more stressful than it needed to be.
What ended up working for me was applying to 9 schools total. For me, that was enough to have options without completely frying my brain.
- 2 safeties where my stats were comfortably above the average
- 4 targets that felt realistic but not guaranteed
- 3 reaches that I loved and didn’t want to regret not trying for
I originally thought I needed to apply to like 15-20 colleges just to be “safe,” but once I started writing supplements, I realized that number can get out of control fast. Every extra school sounds manageable until you’re writing why us essays at 1 a.m.
The biggest thing I learned is that the right number depends on a few real factors:
- how much time you actually have for essays
- whether you need a lot of financial aid
- how balanced your list is
- if you’d genuinely be happy attending every school on it
If I’m being honest, I think a lot of people build huge lists because they’re anxious, not because those schools are all good fits. I definitely did that at first. Cutting my list down made me write better applications because I could spend more time on each one.
My personal advice: if your list is balanced, somewhere around 8-12 colleges can be enough for a lot of students. Not everyone needs that many, and some people need more, especially for super competitive majors, but I wouldn’t assume “more = better.”
If anyone else is stuck on how many colleges should I apply to, try sorting your list into safety/target/reach first. That made the answer way clearer for me.
