Last semester I stared at a draft email for like 40 minutes because I had no idea how to ask professor for recommendation letter stuff without sounding awkward or entitled. What ended up working was making it super easy for them to say yes or no.
My basic tip: don’t just ask “can you write me a letter?” Give context fast. I used a short message with:
- what class/research I knew them from
- one sentence about what I’m applying to
- the deadline
- why I thought they could speak to my work
- a resume + short brag sheet
The brag sheet helped a lot because professors are busy and probably don’t remember every detail. I included projects from their class, grades, a couple strengths, and the programs I was applying to.
Big thing that made it feel more respectful: I asked if they could write a strong recommendation. That wording matters. It gives them a way to decline if they don’t know you well enough.
Something like: “Would you feel comfortable writing a strong recommendation letter for my application?”
Also ask early if you can. I did mine about a month ahead, and I think that helped. If the deadline is close, at least acknowledge that you know it’s short notice.
If anyone wants, I can also drop the exact email structure I used because keeping it short was honestly the main reason I finally hit send.
