How to build college list was weirdly harder for me than writing some of my essays, so I wanted to drop the simple system I ended up using in case anyone else is stuck. I kept trying to make a “perfect” list, but what helped more was making a balanced college list that actually fit my stats, budget, and vibe.
What worked for me was a 4-step filter:
- Start with non-negotiables. Mine were cost, distance from home, major availability, and school size. If a college missed 2 of those, I cut it fast.
- Sort schools into 3 buckets. I used likely, target, and reach. Not based on vibes only — I compared my GPA/test scores to the school’s middle 50% and looked at admit rates.
- Check financial reality early. This saved me so much time. I used net price calculators before getting emotionally attached to schools I probably couldn’t afford.
- Do a fit check. I read student newspapers, looked at course requirements, and watched random student day-in-the-life videos. That gave me more useful info than just scrolling rankings.
A rough structure that felt manageable:
- 2-4 likely schools
- 3-5 target schools
- 2-4 reach schools
Also, I made a spreadsheet with columns for deadline, essay count, testing policy, cost, major strength, and one note about campus feel. Super basic, but it stopped everything from blending together.
Biggest tip: don’t build your list based only on prestige. Build it around where you would actually be happy and able to attend.
