how to improve TOEFL speaking score - the 2 habits that helped me most

How to improve TOEFL speaking score was basically my search every night for two weeks, and the biggest thing I learned is that speaking got easier when I stopped treating it like a vocab test and started treating it like a timing test.

The 2 habits that helped me most:

  1. Practice with a super simple answer template.
For independent tasks, I used: opinion - 2 reasons - quick example - short ending. For integrated tasks, I forced myself into: main point from reading, main point from lecture, how they connect. Having a structure saved me when I panicked.
  2. Record 45-second and 60-second answers every day.
I didn’t do long study sessions. I just picked 3 random questions, answered them on my phone, and listened back once. I was looking for only 3 things: Did I actually answer the question? Did I pause too much? Did I finish on time?

A random tip that mattered more than expected: don’t chase fancy words. My score improved when I used clear, basic English with clean transitions like first, also, for example, because of that. If your ideas are organized, you already sound better.

Also, if you run out of ideas, keep one bank of personal examples ready: school stress, group projects, commuting, part-time jobs, online classes. I reused the same kinds of examples a lot and it was totally fine.

My rule was: clear answer > impressive answer.

If you want a quick routine, try this for a week:

  • 1 independent speaking question
  • 2 integrated speaking questions
  • listen back and note 1 repeated mistake
  • redo only the worst answer once

That redo part helped a lot because I could actually hear improvement instead of just grinding more questions.
