how to improve TOEFL speaking score - the drill that helped me

If you’re stuck on how to improve TOEFL speaking score, the biggest thing that helped me was stopping random practice and doing the same short speaking drill every day. My TOEFL speaking answers used to sound scattered, and this made them way more organized.

What I did:

  1. Pick one question type and do 3 prompts in a row. Don’t jump between all 4 tasks at first.
  2. Use one simple template for structure: main idea, 2 reasons/details, quick conclusion. Nothing fancy.
  3. Record every answer on your phone.
  4. Relisten immediately and check only 3 things: did I answer the question, did I pause too much, did I finish clearly?
  5. Redo the same prompt once right after. The second version is usually much better, and that helps build habits fast.

A small tip that mattered more than I expected: don’t try to sound “advanced.” For TOEFL speaking, clear and direct is better than forcing difficult vocab and then getting lost halfway through.

I also kept a tiny list of filler words I overused like um, like, and you know. Not to remove them completely, just to notice them. Once I started tracking that, my speaking sounded more confident.

My rule was: structure first, pronunciation second, fancy vocabulary last.

If you want a simple routine, do 20 minutes a day: 5 minutes planning, 10 minutes recording 3 answers, 5 minutes review. It’s boring, but honestly this was the most effective TOEFL speaking practice I found.

If anyone wants, I can also share the exact template I used for independent and integrated speaking.
