How to improve TOEFL speaking score was literally the thing I kept searching before my retake, because speaking was stuck at 20 no matter how much vocab I memorized. What finally helped me was realizing TOEFL speaking is way more about structure and timing than sounding “advanced.”
On my first try, I answered like I was having a normal conversation, which made me ramble and run out of time. For the retake, I used the same simple format almost every time:
- Main point in the first sentence
- 2 reasons or 1 reason + 1 example
- short conclusion if there was time
For independent speaking, I practiced saying stuff like: I prefer X for two reasons. First... Second... For example... It sounds basic, but it made me way clearer.
For integrated tasks, note-taking mattered more than I expected. I stopped trying to write full sentences and only wrote:
- reading main idea
- lecture/opinion = agree or disagree
- 2 supporting points
That way I could actually look down and speak instead of panicking.
Another thing: I recorded myself every day for like 10 days. Not for hours, just 15-20 minutes. When I listened back, I noticed the same problems every time:
- speaking too fast at the start
- long pauses before examples
- repeating the question too much
Once I fixed those, my score went up from 20 to 25.
Biggest mindset change: don’t try to sound impressive. Try to sound organized and easy to follow.
If anyone wants, I can also share the exact speaking templates I used. They were super simple, but honestly that was the whole point.
