When I was choosing classes in junior year, I kept googling IB vs AP for US universities because everyone around me acted like there was one correct answer. My school offered both, and I spent weeks stressing that if I picked wrong, colleges would somehow read it as me not being ambitious enough.
I ended up doing mostly AP instead of the full IB diploma, and for me that was definitely the better choice. The biggest reason was flexibility. I knew I was stronger in some subjects than others, so AP let me load up on the classes that actually fit my interests instead of committing to the whole IB structure. I took AP Calc, AP Lang, APUSH, AP Bio, and a couple others, and it felt way more manageable than trying to balance HLs, SLs, TOK, EE, and CAS all at once.
From what I saw during applications, US universities did not treat AP as “less serious” just because I wasnt doing IB. They seemed to care more about whether I challenged myself within what my school offered and whether my grades stayed strong. One of my friends did full IB and also got great results, but she was way more overloaded than I was for most of senior year.
A few things I learned:
- If your school is known for IB and you genuinely like that style, IB can look great.
- If you want more freedom to focus on your best subjects, AP might make more sense.
- For US admissions, course rigor matters, but so does not destroying your GPA.
- Credit policies vary a lot, so check each college because some give better credit for AP exams than IB scores, and some are the opposite.
So basically, for IB vs AP for US universities, I dont think one automatically wins. I think the better option is the one you can actually do well in without being miserable.
