My college application timeline senior year was a mess until I stopped treating it like one huge deadline and split it into monthly checkpoints. I thought I was being “chill” by waiting until fall to really start, but it just made everything pile up at once.
What helped me most was making a super simple plan:
- August: finalize college list, ask for recommendation letters, and draft the main personal statement
- September: finish activities section and get a rough draft done for any early applications
- October: revise essays like crazy and submit anything due Nov 1 before Halloween if possible
- November: regular decision supplements, scholarship apps, and FAFSA/CSS stuff
- December-January: proofread everything, send scores if needed, and check portals constantly
The biggest mistake I made was underestimating supplements. I had this weird idea that once the Common App essay was done, I was basically finished. Not true at all. Some of the “short” why us essays took me longer than my main essay because I had to actually research each school.
Also, I started a spreadsheet way too late, but once I did, it saved me. I tracked deadlines, essay prompts, recommendation status, and whether each application was submitted. Nothing fancy, just enough so I could see what was still hanging over me.
If I could redo senior fall, I would start drafting in summer even if the essays felt bad. Bad drafts are still way better than staring at a blank screen in October.
