I was stuck in the same score range for weeks, and when I searched for TOEFL reading tips for a high score, most advice was either super obvious or way too long. What finally helped me was changing how I read the passage.
I stopped trying to understand every word. Instead, I read for structure: main idea, author attitude, and where examples were located. Then when a question asked about a detail, I already knew where to go back.
- Do the easier question types first so you save time for inference/vocab ones.
- Underline transition words like however, in contrast, therefore.
- For summary questions, eliminate choices that are too specific.
- If two answers seem possible, pick the one supported by the passage, not the one that sounds generally true.
This sounds basic, but practicing that way moved me up way more than just doing random sets. If anyone wants, I can also share the little reading routine I used before each practice test.
