senior year college application timeline that kept me sane

Last September I kept googling college application timeline senior year because I felt like everyone else already had a perfect plan and I was just reacting to deadlines. What finally helped was making one simple timeline by month instead of thinking about the whole process at once.

Here’s the version I wish I had earlier:

  • August: finalize your college list, open the Common App, make a spreadsheet with deadlines, essay requirements, and whether each school needs scores, recommendations, or supplements.
  • September: ask for recommendation letters early, confirm your senior schedule is solid, and start your personal statement. If you’re applying early anywhere, this month matters a lot.
  • October: finish a strong draft of your main essay, request transcript sending, and work through supplements school by school. Also submit FAFSA/CSS stuff as soon as it opens if that applies to you.
  • November: early action/early decision deadlines hit here for a lot of schools, so aim to submit a few days before the actual date. Double-check portals after submitting.
  • December: revise regular decision essays and update activities/honors if anything changed. If early results come back, adjust your list without panicking.
  • January: most regular decision apps are due around now. Finish financial aid forms and keep checking for missing documents.
  • February-March: scholarship applications, interviews, and portal checks. Don’t mentally check out.
  • April-May: compare aid offers, revisit schools if possible, and decide by commitment day.

A few things that saved me:

  1. Set your personal deadline 5 days before the real one.
  2. Keep one doc with every prompt pasted in.
  3. Do supplements in order of nearest deadline, not favorite school.
  4. Tell one friend or parent your timeline so someone can keep you accountable.

If anyone wants, I can also drop a super basic spreadsheet layout for a senior year application plan because that was honestly the only reason I stopped missing tiny stuff.
