Stepping off the plane into the U.S. was a whirlwind of excitement and nerves. I remember thinking, 'What have I gotten myself into?' As an international student, the student life in the USA is a mix of freedom, challenges, and tons of learning. Here are three things I wish someone had told me before I arrived.
1. Culture Shock is Real, But Not What You Expect
People often talk about culture shock like it’s a huge, dramatic drop, but for me, it was more about the little things. Understanding when to say 'please' and 'thank you' during group discussions or figuring out how to order coffee without sounding too lost really hit home. It’s the everyday interactions that can catch you off guard.
2. Academic Expectations
The academic culture here is way different; discussions are encouraged, and teachers often want your opinion. It was weird at first. I remember being terrified to speak up, but once I did, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Don’t be afraid to engage in class; your voice matters!
3. Building a Community
It took me a little while to find my tribe. I got involved in some clubs and organizations, and wow, what a difference it made! There’s nothing quite like connecting with others who understand what it’s like to be far from home. If you find a space where you feel comfortable, take advantage of it!
So, for future international students, know that student life in the USA is a beautiful journey of growth. Embrace the small moments, engage in every way you can, and don’t hesitate to reach out. You got this!
