TOEFL reading tips for high score are exactly what I have been searching for this week, but most advice feels super generic. I am stuck in that annoying range where my reading is not terrible, but it is also not scoring where I need it to. I usually understand the passage overall, then lose points on detail questions or waste too much time going back and rereading.
My biggest problem is timing. If I try to read carefully, I get behind. If I skim fast, I miss important stuff and then panic on the questions. The vocabulary-in-context questions are usually okay for me, but inference and sentence insertion questions keep messing me up. I also feel like sometimes two answer choices both look possible, and I pick the “kind of true” one instead of the best one.
Right now my rough approach is:
- read the first paragraph a little more carefully
- skim the rest and try to note the main idea of each paragraph
- answer questions in order
- go back to the passage when I need proof
But I do not know if this is actually a good strategy for a high score or if I built bad habits.

- Did you fully read the passage first, or go straight to the questions?
- How much time did you spend per passage?
- For inference questions, what helped you stop overthinking?
- Did you take notes, highlight mentally, or just keep everything in your head?
- What changed your score the most: practice volume, strategy, or vocabulary work?
I am also curious if anyone had a specific breakthrough. Like one thing that suddenly made the section click. For example, did you start focusing more on paragraph purpose, transition words, wrong answer patterns, or anything like that?
One thing I noticed is that I do better when I force myself to find the exact sentence that supports the answer, but that also slows me down a lot. I cannot tell if that is something I should keep doing until it becomes faster, or if high scorers are using a different method entirely.
If you have any TOEFL reading tips for high score that are more practical than “just practice more,” I would really appreciate it. Even a simple routine like how you reviewed mistakes after a practice test would help. I feel like I am putting in hours, but not improving in a smart way.
